Disability
Awareness
Each of these drivers has undergone
skills training at the McKinnon Centre in Broughty Ferry, under Dundee
City Council’s initiative to include disabled people in as many
facets of day-to-day life as possible, and hold a disability awareness
certificate, (like the one displayed on the screen). Due to lack of disability
training, The Dundee City Council set up a training course for taxi
drivers, where the skills gained include an understanding of the needs
of the
disabled section of our community along with practical guidance in
the manoeuvring and securing of wheelchairs and their occupants. This
is
to ensure the safety of disabled passengers and allow drivers to understand
the problems faced by them. Whilst it would be impractical for a driver to convey and accompany
a disabled person only, there will be no extra charge for anyone attending
that person in the taxi. |
